NEW DELHI: Motorola has made the "exciting announcement" that it teased last week. The Lenovo-owned manufacturer has announced the second-generation Moto E smartphone in two variants -- one featuring 4G LTE support, while the other compatible only with 3G networks.

Motorola in a blog post announced that the new Moto E will begin rolling out in more than 50 countries in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia at $119.99 (3G) and $149.99 (LTE).

The two new Moto E (Gen 2) variants sport a 4.5-inch, 540 x 960p display and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, same as the one on the first-generation model; the two will run on Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system.

The biggest upgrade for Moto E is in the chipset, moving from the 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor to the new 64-bit quad-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 chip. Another big change is the arrival of the 0.3MP front camera; the original Moto E did not have a selfie shooter.

Motorola has added autofocus capability to the rear camera. The battery capacity has also increased to 2,390mAh, up from the 2,080mAh powerhouse of the first-generation model.

The rear camera resolution and RAM remain constant at 5MP and 1GB, respectively; Motorola has still not added the flash on the back in the new Moto E. The 8GB of built-in storage can be can be expanded via microSD card up to 32GB.

The company says it is also bringing some software features from its Moto X flagship, and includes Moto Display and Moto Migrate. "We're introducing the next generation, packed with more features and functionality to give people around the world even greater access to life's possibilities -- without a hefty price tag," the company said in a statement.

While the standard units will be available in black or white colours, the phone can be customized using interchangeable Motorola Bands and Grip Shells.

It is likely that Motorola will launch the Moto E in the India soon, considering that the country is one of the biggest markets for the company. With the Moto E 4G, Motorola will be joining the race of budget 4G phones and will compete against the likes of Lenovo A6000, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G, Micromax's YU Yureka and Microsoft Lumia 638.
