According to Intel, the Atom x3 (formerly known as SoFIA) will be seen in devices that are priced at $175 (approximately Rs 11,000) , whereas Atom x5 and Atom x7 will be seen on devices priced over $175 and under $350 (approximately Rs 22,000). The Atom x3 is Intel’s first SoC with an integrated modem (both in the 3G and LTE variants) whereas the Atom x5 and x7 come with a discrete modem.
Intel SoCs have been seen on Android handsets and tablets, but that market is still ruled by players such as Qualcomm and MediaTek. But one thing that gives Intel chips and edge over Qualcomm is their compatibility with both Android and Windows OSes. With the consumer version of the Windows 10 OS to be used across devices, Intel Atom X series chips’ release has been timed well.
All the Atom X series chips come with 64-bit architecture, but the x5 and x7 mobile chips are the first to be based on the 14nm manufacturing process. This allows device makers to have devices which consume less power while keeping the performance better. According to Intel, the Atom x7 is twice as fast in GFXBench as compared to Atom Z3795 and 50% faster in 3D Mark.
Intel has partnered with Asus, Foxconn and Pegatron for the Atom x3, and Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Toshiba and Asus for Atom x5 and Atom x7. Intel has not announced an exact release date but expect to see products with Atom X series chipsets during the Windows 10 launch later in 2015.
